  • Congratulations are due..... to Prof. Max Lagally, of the Materials Science and Engineering Dept., UW-Madison, for his recent receipt of the 'MRS Medal' award from the Materials Research Society. Prof. Lagally received the award in a special ceremony at the annual Fall Meeting of the MRS in Boston.

Election results for the new User’s Advisory Committee are in. New three year members are C. Denise Caldwell (U. Central Fla.), Joseph Woods (U. Nebraska), and Rong Liu (ANL). Continuing members are J. Campuzano (U. Ill.-Chicago), G. J. Lapeyre (MSU), T.C. Chiang (U. Ill.-Urbana), G. M. Bancroft (U. West. Ont.), C. G. Olson (Ames), and D. W. Lynch (ISU). The new one-year term 'young investigator' member is Bill O’Brien (UWM). The CXrL representative is Greg Wells. Dave Lynch is the Chair of the committee.

Investigators from the SRC community are deeply involved in the American Vacuum Society. Prof. John Weaver (U. Minn.) is president-elect, and will take office in January 1996. Brian Tonner (SRC/UWM) is this year’s program chair for the Surface Science Division.

We hear that..... New horizons beckon for some of our SRC Alumni. Gerry Harp has moved from Stuart Parkin’s group at IBM-Almaden to start a new program as an Assistant Professor at Ohio University. Rong Liu will join Michigan State University as an Assistant Professor next Fall. Recent Ph.D. graduate Sean Frigo (UW ‘94) will pursue research at the Technical University of Munich, working with Prof. Dietrich Menzel, having won a prestigious Alexander von Humboldt fellowship.
