THE ELECTRONIC ALADDIN NEWSLETTER NO. 10

January / February 1997

NEW DATE AND VENUE FOR THE SRC USERS MEETING (MAY 3 AT SRC)

The rededication of the SRC (see item 2) opened up the opportunity to gather a larger-than-usual group of users at SRC for the Users Meeting. Instead of the planned meeting on Sunday, March 16 at the site of the APS March Meeting in Kansas City, the Users Meeting will now be held at SRC on May 3. Prior to the Users Meeting, there will be a meeting of the Users Advisory Committee.

The Users Meeting will begin on May 3 in the afternoon with an update of the SRC, featuring new user facilities such as a spin-polarized, angle-resolved photoemission system and a high resolution Scienta spectrometer (see item 3). During dinner, the Aladdin Lamp Award will be presented for the best thesis performed at SRC. Suggestions about the Users Meeting are welcomed. Send them to Franz Himpsel (himpsel@comb.physics.wisc.edu) or Pam Layton (playton@src.wisc.edu).

REDEDICATION OF THE SRC MAY 3

The official rededication of the SRC as the Ednor M. Rowe Synchrotron Radiation Center will be held at SRC on May 3, 1997 at 10:00 am. It will be followed in the afternoon by the SRC Users Meeting and by a dinner where the the Aladdin Lamp Award will be presented for the best thesis performed at SRC.

SCIENTA ANALYSER ORDERED AS USER INSTRUMENT

To keep SRC at the forefront of high-resolution photoemission studies, a Scienta analyzer with 4 meV resolution has been ordered. Combined with the new undulator beam line at the SRC, this instrument will push the state of the art in resolving the electronic structure of solids and atoms/molecules. The analyzer is due to be delivered and tested mid-'97 and will be placed on high-resolution beam lines, such as the new, undulator-fed plane grating monochromator (PGM), the 4m NIM, and the high energy resolution monochromator (HERMON). The instrument will be available to outside users, with a SRC postdoc in charge of optimum utilization. For details contact Hartmut Hoechst (hhochst@facstaff.wisc.edu) or Franz Himpsel (himpsel@comb.physics.wisc.edu).

LAST CALL FOR BEAM TIME PROPOSALS

Beam time proposals for the period from August '97 to July '98 are due on February 7. A Beamtime Request form can be obtained from the SRC Web site. It is available as zipped Word file or as an HTML form. For a hard copy of the form, please contact Pam Layton (playton@src.wisc.edu).

SOLICITATION OF NOMINATIONS FOR THE ALADDIN LAMP AWARD
